No difference between work and leisure - Article by Mark Davis UK BDM

A keen fisherman for as long as I can remember, I like to take the opportunity to go carp fishing whenever I can.

I arrived at the bank of the lake early afternoon. There were two experienced fishermen already there fishing. As a fisherman, you can tell this by the equipment and set up they are using.

Before heading to my swim, I asked them how they were doing. They eagerly responded, telling me how successful they had been so far, netting half a dozen carp between them. They told me they were fishing with fruit flavoured boilies (a specialist carp bait) and fishing off of the lake’s main feature which is an island straight ahead of them. They told me that whilst the lake is producing some fish, they are mainly small carp around the 3lb-5lb mark.

Four hours later and having bagged 9 carp, the smallest being 7lb and a few of them in double figures, it was time for me to pack up and head home.

Why was I so much more successful than the experienced fishermen I had spoken to earlier that day?

A feature like the island was indeed a good target by the experienced fisherman, but they simply didn’t know the lake as well as I did. The island was a good place to fish, but it wasn’t where the larger fish were. They were under the overhanging trees on the right hand side.

I used a pellet, flavoured with green lip mussels over the top of green lip mussel paste that was used to bait the area. The larger fish preferred this to any fruit flavoured baits or even natural baits such as corn, maggot etc.

The reason I was successful wasn’t that I was any better than the fisherman I had spoken to earlier, it was my knowledge and experience of that lake that made the fishing successful.

The other fishermen, whom I hadn’t seen before and most likely won’t see again, had come to this lake and had mild success, based on their skills and knowledge of fishing other waters. But to have had real success, they needed what I had, intimate knowledge of the lake itself.

It was this that led to my article and to draw the parallel that there are many experienced recruiters and recruitment agencies in the market, all with the skills and experience to do what they do, but how many really know the Lake? The “ECM, BPM and BPO” lake, that is…
